Karen Beltran - TEST
Sra. Beltran, Spanish Teacher
My name is Karen a.k.a. SEÑORA Beltrán. I was born and raised in Mexico, City where I received my bachelor’s degree in Education and did two years of a master in Special Education. After living in various countries while raising my children we moved to San Diego -almost 21 years ago- where I had the opportunity to start doing again what I love: “TEACHING”. Teaching is my passion! I taught for 14 years at Horizon Prep and I am just finishing my 5th year at The Rhoades School. At both schools I developed the Spanish program for elementary. The overall objectives of my program are to develop listening and speaking proficiency. One of the methods I use is called TPRS “Teaching Proficiency Through Reading & Stories”. It is a multi-sensory methodology. For example, “gestures and acting” meet the needs of kinesthetic learners; “visual images” (illustrations, props, puppets, live actors, etc.) satisfy the needs of visual learners, etc. Students develop “a real ear for the language”, learning to listen and respond to what sounds right. I created a "Spanish Spelling Bee" where the students not just learn vocabulary that they can use in daily life but also develop a range of cognitive skills including the ability to handle pressure, enhance their memory and allow them to better develop their learning skills. I also created two different showcases, one for the First & Second graders called "Spanish Speaking Bee" and one for Fifth graders called "Spanish Phrases Bee", where students are able to display their Spanish speaking skills using the vocabulary & phrases that they learned.

Grade Level: Third Grade - Sixth Grade Class Description: This Spanish class is designed as an introductory course for beginners, The students will establish a strong foundation and promote future success in Spanish learning for years of study to come. My program is a multi-sensory methodology. Gestures, singing and acting, for example, meet the needs of kinesthetic learners. Visual images, Illustrations, props, puppets, live actors, etc, satisfy the needs of visual learners. Students will develop “a real ear for the language”, learning to listen and respond to what sounds right. One of the techniques I use is “the spiral method” which tries to keep concepts and vocabulary learned at the top of the student’s mind. This is achieved by continuously reviewing the concepts and vocabulary taught, while adding new words; this process helps to build a solid foundation for students to continue to build upon. The overall objective of my program is to develop listening and speaking proficiency.
